Exhibit Duration: April 1-April 31
As the future of the earth hangs in the precarious balance of an unknown fate, SEA Change's upcoming exhibit unites Portland's progressive designers, fostering cross-pollination that catalyzes future designs for an equal, peaceful, compassionate, just future. This visual fusion of evolutionary designers will put the puzzle pieces together of how to integrate nature and society. Architectural plans for coexisting with the environment, building community, and transitioning from oil to sustainability take shape in natural playgrounds, graywater systems, neighborhood energy utilities, and cat palaces...

the way to Christ is simple

God's Blessings often benefit all people. But many of His promises are only for His own children. If you're not sure that you're a part of God's family, He offers you this invitation. The way to Christ is simple:

1. Admit that you have a need.

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Romans 3:23

2. Believe that Jesus is God, the Son, who paid the wages of your sin.

For the wages of sin is death [eternal separation from God]; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6:23

3. Call upon God.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Romans 10:9

King James Version

The Holy Bible

ISBN 978-1-58660-198-0

A New Gay Dating Site……with a twist

YES....you will see this post in my various tribes, so if you've seen it in another tribe you're a member of.........Don't Bitch. OKAY! And I say this in jest:-)

This gay dating site is unique in regards, to its approach, for its membership. Here’s the premise of the site, written and originated by the creator of the site:

“Welcome to Dissident Dating”

“Maybe you don't test for HIV or maybe you did and just don't trust the results. Maybe you've learned that AIDS is not caused by HIV, and that tests are inaccurate. Then you can meet like-minded people here, make friends, date, and...well, its up to you! On this site no one posts "status" because negative and positive are proven to be meaningless or at best misleading. Why not live and love!”

My Observation:

With all the fear and pandemonium about dating (these days) a person labeled ‘so-called’ hiv-antibody positive, this site doesn’t ask that you reveal your ‘status’ because the members are dissidents, and have accepted, not to accept, the fear based paradigm of hiv ‘antibodies’ being the cause of aids.

Definition of ‘Antibody’: any of numerous Y-shaped protein molecules produced by B cells as a primary immune defense, each molecule and its clones having a unique binding site that can combine with the complementary site of a foreign antigen, as on a virus or bacterium, thereby disabling the antigen and signaling other immune defenses.

So if you’ve been labeled hiv-antibody positive, or negative, or just don’t know, no one on the dating site will judge you about that. Just be prepared for a vast amount of mind-blowing (and boggling) knowledge from some of the members, you may come to know, on the site.

What I find interesting about the site, is it’s ability, to reach out to people, who, are taking a different stance and approach on dating, loving, meeting someone new, and being with someone who shares their views about the ‘Otherside’ of the hiv paradigm and model. And hey…you just might learn something new, and a thang-or-two, from a member, or so.

This is not a debate, or bitching, or mud-slinging site; that usually happens after you’re in a relationship. It’s a gay DATING site, with a majority of members who are interested in meeting and getting to know others, who question(s) the model we call hiv. Revealing your status (I would assume) – to another member – it entirely up to you and he, if you care to include it in your dialogue, but not required.

The site is new, so it will be a matter of time, when the membership continues to grow.
It is ‘not’ to assume that every member joining -- this site -- are considered as hiv antibody pos, because a lot of people aren’t, because they know enough and don’t believe hiv=aids, to be afraid of being with someone label as pos:
http://www.dissidentdating.com/index.php

Be open-minded. You may met someone who can change you life for the better. One just never knows, where cupid may strike.

Theatre MAMA seeks ACTORS, PERFORMERS, DANCERS, ACROBATS, GYMNASTS, OUTGOING INDIVIDUALS

For this action, we are looking for creative people to help us "create a buzz" in Portland. We call our promotions, theatrical promotions, in that we hire all sorts of talent to deliver materials to the public in a creative and fashionable manner! Imagine a pair of stilt walking angels around Downtown at 5pm to wave goodnight to all of the commuters and leave them with a flier announcing the arrival of CORTEO by Cirque du Soleil. We deliver a lot of materials to the public and we do it with a lot of fun, theatrical energy and positive emotion!

In addition to performers, we are searching for solid, energetic, positive people that have promoting experience.

THE SCHEDULE FOR ACTIVITIES IS AS FOLLOWS:

Saturday, March 1, 2008 from 9am-midnight - ANGEL ACTION

The locations for the above times are TBA! To participate, Angels must be available for all of the above times.

For the Angel Action, we seek performers to be in character, hand out fliers and "cause a scene." Must have ALL WHITE clothing and be comfortable promoting outside. For sample pics of previous Angel Actions, visit: http://www.theatremama.com/cirque/angelaction and/or http://www.saltimbancobus.com and/or http://www.theatremama.com/cirque/kiteaction

This is a paid gig which requires the utmost professionalism. In addition to being paid, each of our angels will receive one invitation to see CORTEO live on the private viewing on Friday, February 29, 2008 @ 7:30pm....

What do you do if you get a BONER in public?

I don’t know how I came across this or it to me, but (lol) when I saw it, I went ‘OH-MY-GOD!’ I don’t know if I was embarrassed for the guy or what. This dude does whatever he can to conceal it in his wrestler tights, but, it’s very evident he got a BIG ‘boner’ while wrestling with his opponent, in a public area mind you. Do these guys get excited when they wrestle? Does adrenaline cause their dicks to swell? Here’s the evidence: http://youtube.com/watch?v=OQT_ZcUBAY8

Also this is another with a HUGE bulge, from a runner, and it just can’t stop jiggling in his spandex as it runs ahead of him: http://youtube.com/watch?v=HxnISJYyoYk

Has this (getting a boner in public) ever happen to you? What do you do to conceal it, it you try to?

I will repost this in my other tribes.

I am contemplating a relocation to Portland in a few years. I have been told that although Portland is not as culturally diverse as many other west coast cities, race and ethnicity are less of an issue for the general population. I'd appreciate your opinions.

Im considering a move out to Portland this summer -- I am coming from NYC and was considering San Fran but Portland seems more my thing. Can you all tell me -- whats the gay vibe out there? Many gay men? Spiritual? I am looking for an alive and awake community of excentric and beautiful gay men.... What do you all think?
Gracias.

5/12 What does your soul long for?

MEN’S SOULFORCE:
Through tarot imagery, storytelling, ritual, & labyrinth
Explore your passions/joys, wounds/fears, & the allies/keys that unlock them
5/12/07, Sat, 4:00-10:30 pm

Do you sense a deeper force operating in your life - a force that knows what you long for and what you're really capable of? Through exploring tarot imagery, story-telling, journaling, ritual, & walking a labyrinth, you can discover aspects of your Soul Force - the stories that propel you to be authentically powerful.

You can playfully and simply tell stories and create your own rituals to look more deeply at your passions/joys, wounds/fears, and the allies & keys that help you invoke parts of your soul’s story. In this workshop we’ll create a quiet, sacred space, and from within that place we’ll ask “Why am I here?” And then we will listen, and keep on listening. We don’t need burning bushes or perfect answers, just what’s true for now.

CO-FACILITATORS:: Paul H. Richard, a life-coach specializing in archetypal psychology, soul mentoring, and the use of evolutionary astrology, tarot, labyrinth, & other shamanic techniques to discover your soul's purpose; James Fabish is a licensed massage therapist & perpetual student and practitioner of the healing arts.

DIVERSITY: We welcome & are strengthened by adult men of all ages, sizes, shapes, colors, orientations, spritualities (and none), and backgrounds (including trans guys). Thanks for helping us increase the diversity of men who get invited to this event by forwarding this invitation to friends & colleagues who might be interested.

I want to hold a mock gay shame event, I really do. Make a big deal about it being INDOORS, a tagline of "We're here, [marked out], get used to it!"...

And then a part of the show called DETHRONING THE QUEEN where they sit someone decked out as an absolute drag goddess on a toilet and take her apart until she's just a man wearing duct tape and with a pair of pantyhose on his head.

Various vignettes with racist/sexist/elitist undertones... things of that sort, and at the end, 9 feet of hair and shoes walks out and goes, "And you know what? Y'all are still gay GAY GAY" before hurling a bucket full of glitter on the crowd

4/22 Earth Day Men's Eco-Walk

Most men have been taught to be cut off from the earth, their bodies, and their feelings. On Earth Day we have the opportunity to reconnect in a very direct, physical way with endangered plants, animals, and the nature we co-create with them. And you can do this in a tiny nature preserve right in the city:

CAMASSIA ECO-WALK
4/22, Sunday, 1:30 pm Carpool, 2:15pm Eco-Walk

Who knew that one of the smallest, most diverse, and most endangered ecosystems in North America was nestled on 26 acres in West Linn? David Barts (Watermelon), who has been studying and interpreting Northwest plants & ecosystems for more than 20 years will lead us in an exploration of Camassia Natural Area , which has beautiful spring wild flowers, unique endangered plants, and is one of the most unique little nature preserves in the U.S. We’ll enjoy a delicious dinner afterwards.
4/15 Beat-the-Blues this Spring: Men’s Support Group

BEAT-THE-BLUES: Men's Depression Peer-Support Group
4/15 & 5/6 (1st & 3rd Sundays) 6-8 pm

Spring is a beautiful time, but it can be hard if your insides don’t match the outside. If you struggle with depression or feeling down this time of year or know a man who does, please invite them to this twice monthly peer-support group. This isn’t a therapy group, but instead is a warm, supportive group where we focus on what we’re doing and could do to feel better. Specifically we help one another clarify: 1) your wellness vision & goals; 2) your depression triggers & challenges; 3) your wellness strengths, skills, resources; 4) practical actions you're willing to take to feel better; 5) how to ask for concrete support to follow through.

CO-FACILITATORS: Brian Taylor, R.N., who is not an expert on depression but enjoys helping men discover what works for them; and Peter Stankavich, a PSU student in graphic design and psychology, who also likes to facilitate men learning together how to feel better.

DIVERSITY: We welcome adult men of all ages, sizes, shapes, colors, orientations, experience levels, and backgrounds (including trans guys). Thanks for helping us increase the diversity of men who get invited to this event by forwarding this invitation to friends & colleagues who might be interested.

I stopped by the Eagle last night for a minute. The music was crap (Banannarama...oh please). The crowd was a bunch of little teeny-bopper bois, and the ugliest girl I have ever seen. The only nice thing I can say was that my drink was good and the porn was compelling. Where did the good ol raunchy Eagle go?

Invitation to YoHos Social Event for Young Homos

Yoho's (Young Homo's) Group will kick off its new weekly social event for queer men on the Vernal Equinox (Wed, 3/21, 6-8 pm) at Three Friends Coffee House, 201 SE 12th (2 blocks south of Burnside). We'll network, chill, socialize, or even do needlework, swap recipes or music or even stories about the coming Rapture. Who knows, it's Wednesday in Portland—anything could happen if you show up.

YoHo's is a social event for young men to meet other young men outside of bars, bathhouses, and online hook-ups. All men under 30, regardless of size, shape, color, orientaiton, or background are welcome. YOHOS aims to provide the opportunity for men to have fun and connect amongst themselves in a relaxed setting, and recognizes the importance of alternatives to a confining queer culture.

The YoHo's Group is a project of Q-LAND, a non-profit men’s wellness network, that empowers diverse men in the Portland area to discover & manifest their individual & collective potential for wellness, community, friendship/intimacy, spirituality, service, & play.

For more information e-mail Frederic at yohos@qland.org, call the Q-LAND office at 503-223-8822, or check out our websites www.qland.org, groups.myspace.com/yohos

Some friends and I are coming up to Portland next weekend from Ashland. This will be my 1st trip up to portland since i have moved to oregon last march (i know...its a shame) ~ 1 of the nights we want to immerse ourselves into the gay scene up there, since there isnt one down here.....at all! Anyways ~ were looking for some input for things to do ~ is there a certain district that is gay friendly? with good places to eat (vegetarian/vegan)? what are the best places to go dancing? fun bars, etc? and drag shows?

any help would be great!!!

Thanks
Chad

7) ALLIES? who your allies are for setting up informational interviews with?

This Sat, 11/4 Men Finding Wisdom thru Story-telling

Could you forward this to men who have lived interesting stories or who
understand the power of story-telling to help them draw on the wisdom of men of all ages?

MEN’S INTERGENERATIONAL STORY-TELLING
Saturday, 11/4, 4:00-10:30 pm

* Imagine being able to learn from the wisdom of men of all ages.

* Imagine who you could be if men of all ages helped you tell & understand your story, and you helped them tell their’s.

* Imagine story-telling as a tool for transformation & initiation.

For most of human history story-telling has been a crucial part of men’s initiation and empowerment. Nowadays story-telling has been mostly reduced to mere entertainment -- a mass-produced product to be consumed. This has cut men off from the wisdom of the lived past, present, and future – from actually knowing other men’s stories.

In this playful, creative event you’ll tell key parts of your life story to a small group of men of different ages, and they will retell your story in spoken word poetry, short skits, psycho-drama sculptures, paintings/drawings, and other creative techniques.

Our goal is for you to tell the story of your life to men of different ages, and for you to help retell the stories of other men – in ways that reflect you and the wisdom of the inter-generational group you’re apart of. Ultimately this is about friendship, play, creativity, and initiation through story-telling.

DIVERSITY: We welcome men of all ages, sizes, shapes, colors, orientations, story-telling abilities, and life backgrounds (including trans guys). Diversity on all levels helps us learn the many ways we can be men. Could you please help us invite diverse men by forwarding this invitation to any of your friends, colleagues, or acquaintances who might be interested, and by attending with them?

THEE 999 EYES OV ENDLESS DREAM
www.999eyes.com
Lost in time, hidden in the dark corners and in the dusty shelves of old book stores, in the basements of libraries and museums, lies the fabulous, fantastical history of the carnival sideshow - a time when the malformed were glamorized as part of a traveling caravan and not locked up in institutions. A time when there was a place and venue for amazing performers to come together in a gypsy caravan style and change the atmosphere of the town around them - reminding people there is another way of life and relieving people of their daily routines - reminding them of the power of magic and imagination. The roots of radical artistic movements of today are deeply intertwined with the carnival sideshows of the past…
We acknowledge our carnival sideshow roots to empower our communities with alluring, inventive, and fearless displays of imagination and dream! Our carnival sideshow not only provides a place for roving gypsy carnival performers and “human curiosities” to express their art but also provides an environment which revives and highlights the great performers and “freaks” of the past – and their true life stories! Using olde-tyme music, puppets, story telling as well as classic carnival sideshow acts and performance we create a world that taps into profound emotion, reminding the AUDIENCE of the actualization of the living dream. At the same time, this gives the “human curiosities” of the modern age a venue to be appreciated once again - this is our mission.
Our collaborative carnival art troupe is co-created with many fabulous idividuals - musicians, sideshow artists, clowns, writers, experts - each of which works on their routines, props, banners, and costumes in their locale. Each on its own is amazing, and together, we form our carnival ov dreams. We tour selectively, displaying our “History of the FREAKSHOW” museum installation, with a real life modern day freakshow and sideshow for our openings. With all ages kid-themed shows(dream shows) as well as adult-themed “nightmare” performances, our carnival sideshow does well at what we aim to do. We’re recreating the world one carnival at a time – awakening the collective subconscious.
The psyche is never laid so bear as when entering the world ov dream… Our demons and dreamers are assembled in an ever evolving Multi-Form Cabinet containing enough skeletons to squeeze the tears and fears ov even the coldest heart… For we all have dreams, and we all have nightmares… When we enter into the waking dream of beauty and art in life, we realize how real our dreams really are. Staring at our hands, we consider all that they can accomplish, for good or ill. We present our WAKING DREAMS and NIGHTMARES for your perusal… as an actual, real, living, modern day museum ov oddities style freakshow is paraded before your awe-inspired eyes! With a musical background ranging from Old-tyme gypsy jug band to eldritch accordion “eville” puppet madness… all this and more can become available for the entertainment and horror ov THE AUDIENCE, which has the opportunity to sign on the dotted line (in blood) and sell their soul for a glimpse into another world ov phantasmagoric dream!

CORE
www.wearecore.com
Among the founding suspension performers on Earth, up from Los Angeles and Houston for a visit to Cascadia.
"It is our intent to create original and physically demanding works of theatre by blending the practice of modern performance art with ancient rituals of body suspension.
We in CoRE have suspended our own concept of physical limitation, pierced the heart of our fears, and transcended the boundaries of social convention in order to further the understanding of the corporeal and spiritual being. Suspension acts combined with traditional performance art and theatre provide us with a new outlet for artistic expression that enables the audience to join us on our emotional journey. By pushing our own boundaries in life and art, we inspire others to explore their own."

THE ALBERTA CLOWN HOUSE
www.clownhouse.org
A nationally-revered waystation for traveling clown society, led by Dingo Dizmal and Caffeine Enema Jones and featuring at one time or another every punk clown worth his or her salt.

A DICTIONARY OF BLOOD THEATER
"In a sense, there is no true, "real" theatre, only a black Cadillac crushing life and squeezing the heart out of us, one act at a time. It is appropriate then, that we cry, and mourn crushed lives, appropriate to watch as well as to perform. Why puppets? Because, by branch and root, from head to foot, there is not, nor art there be, anything so deep so sad so fun so thought-provoking so shamelessly despised so unrehearsed and prized as the beautiful blank darkness that descends upon you as the flesh is opened to let another story bleed forth.
The first installation of our new show Local man claims to have seen god but can't give an account of what he saw (Decipher that!) opens October 27 and runs throught the next two nights at the Someday lounge in Portland Oregon, moving to other venues down the west coast through October and November. This program deals with the erosion of sanity in the modern world. It is a puppetry program, including live actors and found objects, trash and treasures paraded before you eyes."
www.somedaylounge.com/perform..._theater

LEAPIN' LOUIE LICHTENSTEIN
www.comedytricks.com
Leapin' Louie performs a high energy comedy show featuring cowboy tricks, juggling, acrobatics, music and what-not. He inflames audiences to laughter and wild applause everywhere he plays and that’s a lot of wheres because he has appeared at corporate events, festivals, fairs, schools, etc., in twenty-one different nations.
Say it in one breath for a true feeling of jet lagged exhilaration. Leapin' Louie Lichtenstein has knocked them alive in:
USA, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Great Britain, Ireland, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Morocco, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Japan.
Whoa! Take a breath.

AUBREY BIRDWELL
www.somedaylounge.com/perform...irdwell/
Aubrey Birdwell is a prodigous young gypsy accordionist notorious in all corners of Portland. His work with Cicuri Curajul and Mirumir; and his solo work both with traditional and modified accordions; has distinguished him as one of the most skilled and innovative players in this city. He presents the incidental music for this evening, including a mix of traditional romany songs and his own compositions.

9/9 Men’s Dating Lab: Practical Intimacy Strategies

MEN’S DATING LAB:
Finding Practical Intimacy Strategies
* Workshop: Sat, 9/9, 6:30-l0:30 pm
* On-going Group: lst & 3rd Thurs (begins 9/2l), 7-9 pm

Many men long for more emotionally and physically
intimate relationships, but --

* They’re too busy;
* They’ve been burned;
* They don’t know what they want;
* They’ve tried everything;
* They think they’re too old, shy, ugly, blah, blah . . .

Well love is worth it. Intimacy makes you happier and live longer & better. And you’re capable and desirable enough. You just need a little help figuring out what you want and what you can do – in the real world – to get it.

In this fun, practical workshop you’ll explore with other men:

•	What kinds of intimacies you want;
•	Your intimacy challenges;
•	Your intimacy strengths & skills;
•	Practical experiments to try in the work-shop & in your life for dating & intimacy
•	Asking for concrete support to help you implement what you’ve learned & sustain learning after the workshop

This workshop is not about experts telling us the answers. It is about us supporting one another to find the intimacy visions and strategies that work for each of us. And most of all it’s about figuring out what you can do differently in the real world to get more of the intimacy you want – and get the support to follow through.

If you can’t attend the workshop, you could check out our on-going Dating Lab Support Group that will meet on the lst & 3rd Thursdays each month, 7-9 pm, starting on 9/2l.

CO-FACILITATORS: Alejandro Cantu, 5l, has been a teacher of multi-cultural students for more than 20 years, was in a long-term relationship and is now returning to dating; Wayne Bund, 25, is a teacher of multi-cultural students, has been in several relationships, and has recently moved back to Portland as a single man; Bart Church, 46, has been in several primary relationships, but has viewed his close friendship network as his primary source of intimacy for most of his adult life & believes in valuing friendship networks.

CO-SPONSORS: MenSpirit is a joint project of two non-profit organizations, Q-LAND & LoveTribe, that empowers diverse men in the Portland, OR area to discover and manifest their individual & collective potential for wellness, community, friendship/intimacy, spirituality, & play.

PURE Cirkus Presents: Wonderland

WHAT: PURE Cirkus Presents - WONDERLAND
A dark and twisted cirkus retelling of the classic Lewis Carrol Alice stories
WHERE: The Roseland, downstairs
WHEN: Saturday, September 2nd -- Doors at 8, show at 9 SHARP
HOW MUCH: $10 advance from TIcketsWest or at The Roseland, $12 at the door
http://www.purecirkus.com/

Indeed friends, though we have experienced many ups and downs this month, we must not be late to this very important date with Seattle's premiere cirque noir troupe, PURE Cirkus.

"Cirque noir", of course, being the term that is currently being bandied about to describe a relatively new phenomenon of troupes fusing theatricalized and abstract storytelling with serious circus arts (acrobatics, aerialism, juggling, clowning, contortion, etc.) and the debatably more recent developments in ritual theater (hook suspension, fire spinning, trance states, pain threshhold performance, and so on). Portland's own Societas Insomnia is an example of the cirque noir genre. Seattle's is PURE Cirkus.

Recently awarded a position as Artists in Residency at the Capitol Hill Arts Center, PURE Cirkus has been performing like mad throughout their hometown, and is about to leave for a command performance in Japan. Upon returning, they will nigh-immediately ready themselves for the premiere of their latest show - WONDERLAND.

Wonderland is the first attempt at adaptation for PURE (which stands for "People Undergoing Real Experience"). Alice is undeniably in the air this year, with productions by Noir and AWOL Dance Collective in this week alone, and without a doubt we will do justice to the madcap and eerie devices of Lewis Carrol's tales.

To see how, join us Saturday at The Roseland; and, in a preview lasting from September 12th-16th, the new Someday Lounge in Old Town Portland.

8/l2 Men’s Music Jam; 8/l5 Men’s Contact Improv

Please invite any men who might be interested in the following Q-LAND/LoveTribe MenSpirit events designed to unlock creativity, heal your body, and open your heart:

MEN'S MUSIC JAM: Playing with Improvisation
Sat, 8/l2, 6:30-l0:30 pm
This is a time for all kinds of men to gather to share great (vegetarian) food & great collectively-created, improvised music. Even if you've never made music with a group of men, you can discover your innate creativity, rhythm, and love of music you help create. All of us are connected to rhythms through our heat beat, our breath, and all the flows of our bodies. Rhythm can have profound effects on us; it can slow our heartbeat, calm our respiration, and cause all of the cells of our bodies to vibrate in unison with all the cells of everyone else who hears that flowing sound. When we make music together, it connects us in unique ways. Co-Facilitated by Marvin Moore & Eric Zimmerman.

MEN’S CONTACT IMPROV & Motion Massage
Tue, 8/l5, 7-l0 pm
Contact Improv is an amazing moving meditation that focuses on the point of contact between two people. It looks like a combination of dance (movement), improvisation, meditation, & playful/healing touch. And it’s more than its parts. Motion Massage extends the awareness developed in Contact Improv into a highly intuitive massage form that uses the movement of the whole body to bring about healing, opening, and a nurturing flow. Co-facilitated by Felix Roth, LMT; Jeff Kerr, Daniel Flynn, & Bart Church.

8/5 Can disliking your body make you sick?

Can disliking your body or its parts make you sick? What if the things you believe about your body help determine how healthy you are and will be?

What if billions of dollars were being spent to convince you your body is flawed? And what if this belief and many of the products you buy to “fix” your body are actually making you sick?

MEN'S BODY IMAGES: Can hating your body make you sick?
8/5, This Saturday, 6:30-10:30 pm

In this workshop you’ll look simply and compassionately at which parts of your body you like, and which you dislike. You’ll look at how you feel about your body and its parts, as well as what you tell yourself about your body and its parts.

You’ll use simple practices of small group brainstorming & repetition of new body images, touch, breathing, ritual, play, and awareness to enhance the flow of blood, energy & nutrients to parts of your body you like. You’ll also use these practices to soften and enliven parts of your body you dislike. You’ll physically experience the connection between your beliefs about your body and the amount of blood, immune fluid, energy, oxygen, and nutrients that reach parts of your body.

Your beliefs about your body can make you sick. And the reverse is true. Your beliefs about your body can heal you. It is quite powerful to experience this first hand in your body, rather than as just ideas. And it is exponentially more powerful to do this with the support and energy of a group.

Let us re-imagine our bodies as capable of being beautiful, sexy, powerful,

my older brother made me gay!

The latest Time magazine presents some research which shows that more gay men have older brothers than can be explained by simple averages. Among first born males, the claim is that 3% are gay; but the second born male has a 4% chance; and the more males born of the same mother before you, the better your chances of being gay, so the study asserts.

So....I'm going to do my own "research" if you're willing to respond, dear reader. If you're a gay man reading this:

1. How many older brothers (biological brothers, and presumably maternal half-brothers) do you have?

2. If you have any younger brother(s), is he gay?

It's not cheap but I've put a big chunk of my vacation budget into this one day with the expectation that I'll spend some of the others in college dorms and hostels.

Our wellness can't wait

On the occasion of the death of Eric Rofes, one of the founders of the gay men’s health movement and one of the visionaries who inspired me, it seems important to acknowledge that the health care system in Portland is tragically failing most men, especially queer men. Even the shrinking number of men who have health insurance receive virtually no wellness support from their insurance, and often receive very little beyond wildly escalating premiums. As a lifelong wellness organizer, I’m sure Eric would say, “Stop crying and start organizing!

Below is an essay on the need for, and practical strategies for establishing, a Men’s Wellness Network in the Portland metro area. With our health care system in a state of collapse, it is high time we did something practical and simple to support one another’s wellness. Please read the brief essay below and consider how you can become involved with creating a vital network intended to nurture our collective and individual wellness.

WE WILL NEED:

1) Volunteers to help create a Men’s Wellness Network – see list below.
2) To get the word out. Please forward this e-mail to every man in your community, and consider bringing it up in conversation.
3) Immediate donations of $50-$100 to help us establish a powerful, secure online database that will support the creation of a Men’s Wellness Network. We need to raise $2000 by mid July and we have already raised $1300 in the last week. (Please send your tax-deductible donation to Q-LAND/CIC; 3026 SE 39th Ave; Portland, OR 97202).

VOLUNTEER POSITIONS NEEDED . . .

* WELLNESS COACHES: help men define and manifest their specific wellness visions, understand and overcome wellness challenges, recognize and marshal their wellness resources, and gain confidence and self esteem through vision-driven service to other men in the network.

* MEMBERSHIP TEAM MEMBERS: help invite men to give time and/or money to join the network and keep track of what they need and what they give.

* WEB DATABASE DEVELOPER: create a web-based database that facilitates men joining the network and securely records their visions, needs, challenges, resources, and contributions of time, money, and knowledge, and facilitates men sharing information within mutual support groups designed to meet their specific needs, contribute their resources, and reach their goals.

* DEVELOPMENT TEAM MEMBERS: help raise seed money to launch the Network’s coaching, support groups, and other systems.

Please contact Paul Fukui at volunteer@qland.org or 503-223-8822 if you want more information about these positions. The essay below will tell you why your contribution and these volunteer positions may be critical to your wellness and the wellness of countless other men in our community.

WHY WE NEED A MEN’S WELLNESS NETWORK and
WHAT WE CAN DO TO CREATE IT HERE and NOW . . .

Portland has one of the highest percentages of men who either don’t have health insurance or are grossly under-insured. Because of sexism, homophobia, huge unemployment, massive cuts in public and private health insurance services and coverage, skyrocketing healthcare costs, the failure of health education, and the failure of our political and corporate leadership to prioritize healthcare, more and more men, especially queer men, are contracting and not being adequately treated for HIV, STDs, heart disease, prostate and other cancers, drug/alcohol/sex addictions, depression, anxiety, diabetes, suicidal thoughts/behaviors, and stress-related chronic illnesses like back/neck pain, excess weight, acid reflux and other digestive disorders, etc. It is no accident that men die on average five years younger than women in this state. We have allowed the health care and health education systems to ignore and abandon us.

WE CAN SOLVE OUR PROBLEM: On the occasion of Eric’s death, it seems imperative to say that men CAN and MUST create, and in fact ARE creating, an alternative wellness system that provides highly tailored services to all kinds of men based on our needs for mind/body/spirit wellness and an ethic of mutual support, rather than an ethic of greed and scarcity. We must create a system that learns about and engages each man’s specific wellness visions, challenges, and resources. And most importantly this system must not abandon men when they suffer wellness or financial set backs. It must be there no matter what.

As a record number of us grow older, we cannot afford to wait for the government or health insurance companies to fix the health care system. We now have one of the worst health care systems in the developed world. With costs increasing exponentially while government and the business sector continue to cut budgets, almost everyone is predicting the current system will either continue to get worse -- or collapse entirely.

This fall Q-LAND will be launching a new Men’s Wellness Coaching program that will train men to support one another to:
1) Clarify your individual wellness visions,
2) Overcome and/or manage your specific wellness challenges, and
3) Effectively recognize and utilize your wellness resources.

This coaching program will also help men with similar visions and challenges to create highly tailored mutual support groups such as a weight loss group, a diabetes support group, a dating lab for men whose loneliness is harming them, a right livelihood group for men whose lack of meaningful employment is making them sick, etc.

The coaching program and the mutual support groups, like all other Q-LAND programs, will be open to men regardless of their ability to pay. We expect all men in the wellness network to be of service to other men in the network in ways that match their abilities, skills, and resources. Again, no one will be turned away for lack of funds or because of pre-existing conditions.

We will serve one another from an ethic of abundance and mutual support. While this sounds like pie-in-the-sky, such a wellness network is based on the traditional bartering and mutual support systems used by rural, indigenous, and traditional societies all over the world throughout human history. Bartering and mutual support for health care is a much older, more reliable, and more traditionally successful system than health insurance (which is why the current health insurance system in the U.S. is in a state of collapse). Until universal healthcare somehow miraculously arrives from on high, a Men’s Wellness Network is something concrete and immediately useful we can experiment with in the Portland men’s community. We can learn from one another, and we can help one another.

In the coming years your health will increasingly depend on the quality of the network of people who will support your wellness no matter what. Money will not be enough. Even wealthy people are finding themselves bankrupt overnight by the ways our state and nation fails to deal with health insurance and catastrophic illness. Traditional health insurance and the bloated health care industry it is propping up are increasingly becoming a mirage that gives no one wellness. It is time to invest in a network of men, here and now, who can and will support all of us in very practical, individualized, affordable, and holistic ways.

Let’s start small, make lots of mistakes, learn from them quickly, and build very real and practical systems of mutual support.

We can do this. You can help.
of, by, and for all the men who need and deserve it.

P.S. -- Q-LAND is a non-profit men's wellness network that empowers diverse men in the Portland, OR area to discover and manifest their individual and collective potential for wellness, community, friendship/intimacy, spirituality, and play. We do this by supporting and creating venues and values for life-long, collaborative learning and heart-conscious community among men. We inspire men to live and love well -- through:
* wellness coaching
* social/play events,
* healing touch events,
* yoga and meditation classes,
* online and phone wellness information and referral, and
* other peer-led programs to promote mind, body, spirit wellness among men.

Let me know if you'd like to donate time and/or money to help us empower more men.

Friendship: Beyond Trolls and Twinks

Sat, 6/3, 6:30-l0:30 pm
BEYOND TROLLS & TWINKS: Developing friendships with men of all ages

We live in a time of gigantic and rapid changes. What if our survival depends on the diversity of our friendships – much more than on how much money or stuff we control?

In times of rapid change, two qualities become essential:
1. Creativity and;
2. The ability to create alliances across traditional divisions.

One of the most important and difficult divisions men must learn to bridge is age. Our age stereotypes can crush our ability to even see men, much less get to know them. Younger men can come to trust older men and vice versa, and we all need to be able to relate to men our own age.

In this Playshop you’ll use story-telling, psycho-drama, and guerilla theater to explore, make fun of, and look beyond your age stereotypes. You’ll have the opportunity to really get to know men of all ages – their true gifts, their connections to who you really are.

Imagine having male friends; good friends who are much older than you, much younger, and your own age too? What would you learn about yourself? What would you be able to accomplish?

Friendship is the most powerful institution in our lives – it has the power to vastly expand who we think we are. Developing true, authentic connections with men of all ages is an amazing way to explore who you are and who you can become.

CO-FACILITATORS: Multi-generational team: Drew Gadbois, Youth Outreach Advocate at Janus Youthwork/Outside In/Trans Identity Resource Center; Dan Jones, Guerilla Theater & Youth Group Co-facilitator at Trans Identity Resource Center; Aaron Hornstein, psychotherapist specializing in psychodrama; Jack Cox, longtime AIDS activist/organizer and psychodrama practitioner; Etienne Lilja, actor, youth educator, & street performer.

CO-SPONSORS: MenSpirit is a joint project of two non-profit organizations: Q-LAND & LoveTribe. MenSpirit empowers diverse men in the Portland, OR area to discover and manifest their individual & collective potential for wellness, community, friendship/intimacy, spirituality, & play.

DONATION: $5-$50 (no one turned away for lack of funds; scholarships & work-study available).

(not) back to the bars

Years ago I spent too much time in the gay clubs/bars here in town. I burned out and decided that I didn't really need the bars to have a social life. For quite a whie I kept going just fine, but now I find my social life is dragging a bit. I REALLY don't want to resort to going back to the dens of drear, din, and cig smoke to mingle. So, my fellow PDXers, any ideas on how to spruce up a social life?

5/6 Kindred Spirits: Men Laughing with Life

Saturday, 5/6/06 7:00PM-12:00AM

In this playshop, we will help adult men of all ages, sizes, shapes, colors, orientations, and backgrounds realize the amazing potential for friendship, play, & laughter among men. Kindred spirits are all around you – you need only open up to them and remember how to play.

Throughout history and in virtually every culture male friendship has been an important way for men to get their needs for play, emotional & physical intimacy, and community met. In the modern, industrial world too many men have become cut off from the richness of male friendship and play.

In this event we'll practice remembering how to play together as men.

Bob Czimbal, the facilitator of this event has spent the last 30 years helping corporations, communities, and groups learn how to use play, movement, laughter, creative verbal & non-verbal communication, and healing/nurturing touch to discover the amazing abundance of kindred spirits in our lives. All around us are people who would love to play with us, if we would just invite them to play.

COSPONSORS: Event co-sponsored by MenSpirit, a joint project of two non-profit organizations: Q-LAND & LoveTribe. MenSpirit seeks to empower diverse men in the Portland, OR area to discover and manifest their individual & collective potential for wellness, community, friendship/intimacy, spirituality, & play. We do this by supporting & creating venues and values for life-long, collaborative learning among men.
the PORN OFF is coming

We are all too familiar with mainstream pornography that commodifies sexual expression and reduces it to an empty and often oppressive consumer product.

But, there are alternatives!

The Portland Organization for Radical Naughtiness On Film Fest (PORN-OFF) is an opportunity for amateur filmmakers to submit erotic films to a sex-positive panel of judges to compete for prizes and participate in a private screening event.

We need your help to make this event a success. We are looking for sex-positive individuals, businesses, and organizations to support this festival in many different ways.

How you can help:

** Submit your liberating artistic short porns! We need short films to make this event happen.

•	Spread the word! Contact us for flyers and more information to share – we need people to start working now on their submissions (deadline is the 1st of August)

•	Donate! We need prize donations (for example: sexy products, party passes, hotel stays, books, videos, magazine subscriptions, etc.); donations of food for the film showing and after-party; space for the film showing and after-party as well as fundraising parties; money – any small amount helps immensely since we are functioning purely thanks to volunteers and donations.

•	Volunteer! Work with the PORN-OFF collective to do promotion or help us organize a fundraiser (in the form of a party or show, or whatever other creative ideas you may have!)

Even if you are unable to help us get the things listed above you may know someone who can or with whom we should talk; pass that information on! This is a community-building event and we need a broad range of supporters to make it happen.

Check out our website for more information: www.porn-off.com, or e-mail us at info@porn-off.com.

Hi, everybody!
I'm looking for some decoration to spice up the Sexual Safari. If you have anything available that is jungle/tropical like (shrunken heads, fake plants/trees, tiki torches, netting, etc.), please let me know. If they are of great value (monetary or personal), then it is not a good idea. This is the Shanghai after all. You wouldn't want to see some crackhead strap your authentic Aboriginal warrior mask to his wheelchair and scoot away, would you?

I will gladly return the favor to those who contribute.

Please Fwd: 3/11 Men Practicing Simple Kindness

Men’s Massage Exchange
Sat, 3/11/06 (& Every 2nd Saturday)
7:00 pm – 12:00 am

Thanks for forwarding this invitation to men who might need simple, kind, healing touch . . .

“Understanding is the very foundation of love,
And looking deeply is the basic practice.”
-- Thich Nhat Hanh

REDUCE STRESS: Healing touch can be a powerful, regular, and affordable part of your life. It can reduce stress, improve the functioning of your immune system, help you feel calm and clear, and reduce chronic pain. Most of all it can help you feel at home in your body and your life.

LMT FACILITATOR: Healing touch can be very simple. It can be uncomplicated – done without pursuing erotic desires, without judging yourself or others, without fantasy or anxiety. It helps when a Licensed Massage Therapist shows you simple techniques that can augment your natural intuition. It’s also great when you have plenty of time to practice giving and receiving with several open-hearted men.

SIMPLE KINDNESS: Some people are afraid of touching or being touched by “strangers.” When you get to know people and they share your goals and values, they aren’t strangers. Wouldn’t it be amazing if you realized that strangers can be incredibly kind, and that your best friend was once a stranger?

Some people think men can’t touch without “making it sexual.” What if men of many ages, sizes, shapes, colors, orientations, and backgrounds are quite capable of being really kind and non-sexual in their touch? What if in fact most men are longing deeply for healing, non-sexual touch. Isn’t that what you want? Do you think you are alone in wanting to be touched with simple kindness?

Healing touch has this way of being complete, of helping you feel complete.

DONATION: $20-$50 (no one turned away for lack of funds; scholarships & work-study available)

SPONSORED BY: MenSpirit, a joint project of two non-profit organizations, Q-LAND.org and LoveTribe.org., dedicated to empowering men in the Portland metro area to transform our community so it values friendship, community, service, play and wellness among men, regardless of their race, orientation, age, religion, background, or other characteristics that should not divide men.

Do we need drugs/alcohol to be free, have fun?

Shamans and great artists have often used mood-altering substances to free themselves and speak the truth out beyond the suffocating web that passes for the collective reality. But do we need drugs/alcohol to be free, have fun?

In a capitalist culture, who profits from our reliance on these substances for our freedom? As usual, LoveTribe and Q-LAND are NOT interested in just discussing these issues (talk is usually really cheap & weak), we're interested in creating other, non-commercial ways to support one another in being free, having fun, and speaking our truths with our whole bodies and hearts, not just our minds.

Would you join us in co-creating the next Men's Spirit Pajama Party, this Sat, 9/3, 7 pm - 12 am, where we'll invent ways to have fun, play non-competitive/children's games, make funny faces, have pillow fights, and manage to invent ways to be creative and silly and free without drugs, alcohol, or nicotine?

The New Games movement is trying to unlock the enormous creativity that comes from play. Virtually all mammals and birds spend an enormous amount of time playing throughout their lives, and some important evolutionary biologists believe play has been essential to the survival of most species. Play involves the whole body, mind, and heart. Most modern adult humans rarely play in this full-bodied way. We work, we surf, and we escape our bodies and one another.

Thanks for helping us create spaces where non-commercial, non-drug-induced play among men can happen regularly. Our MenSpirit events welcome all kinds of adult men, regardless of their size, shape, age, orientation, color, background, or experience, including trans men. We have suggested donations for our events, and no one is turned away for lack of funds.

LoveTribe also sponsors lots of non-commercial, non-drug/alchohol events where men and women come together to play in heart conscious, touch positive ways.

2/24 Mmmmm: Diverse Men Healing thru Music, Movement, Touch

Mmmmm is in two weeks -- could you please help us make this event as diverse as possible by forwarding this email to any men who might be interested?*

Mmmmm:
Men, Music, Movement, Massage, Meditation
Fri, 2/24, 7 pm – 12 am

Music, movement, meditation & healing touch have the power to send waves of energy through our bodies that set all our cells vibrating in unity – they allow us to discover our authentic needs for rest, nurturing, and healing. For thousands of years in many cultures men have used music, movement, touch, and meditation to discover who they are out beyond their superficial differences and self-imposed limitations. .

Two weeks from today men of all abilities, ages, sizes, shapes, colors, orientations, and backgrounds (including trans guys) will gather in a smoke, alcohol, drug free space that is wheel-chair accessible. We will explore more authentic, healing connections with ourselves and other men through music, authentic movement, deep relaxation, contact improv, guided meditation, danceability, ecstatic dance, healing touch/massage, and free-style movement and touch.

Each of us will be invited to get in touch with our own needs for rest, healing, and nurturing -- and to move and touch in ways that meet those needs authentically. We will keep our focus on healing and nurturing ourselves first and others as a function of the abundance we feel when we are taking care of ourselves. To keep the space safe for all kinds of men, there will be no genital or anal touching, no asking people out for dates, no sexual come-ons, and everyone will keep their comfortable clothes on (if you want a back massage, you can lift up your shirt for this).

Thanks for helping us to welcome all kinds of men by forwarding this email to the diverse men you care about. Don’t forget the astonishing power of music, movement, healing touch, and meditation to refresh your spirit and free your heart.

Featuring
* DJ DandyLion;
* DJ Keer (who also will facilitate our altar building);
* Felix Roth, LMT, founder of Motion Massage & co-founder of Sacred Circle Dance;
* Curtis Walker, Director, Impetus Arts (mixed-abilities movement);
* Bart Church, Zen Shiatsu Practitioner & yoga teacher.

Co-sponsored by:

* NOTE: If you’d like to print out & distribute the beautiful Mmmmm invitation flier to men who don’t have computers, let me know and I’ll email you the Microsoft Word version of the flier.

FREE MEN’S YOGA CLASS
Wed, 1/4 or 1/11, 6:30-8:30 pm

A recent study in the Annals of Internal Medicine indicated yoga is one of the most effective non-surgical strategies for relieving chronic backpain. And like all wellness strategies, the key is getting the regular support you need to make real changes in your strength, flexibility, circulation, and how you hold stress.

This small class is tailored to your specific wellness goals, abilities, and
limitations. With the support of other men, you'll learn particular
stretches, breath practices, diet changes, and lifestyle changes
traditionally used to achieve your individual wellness goals (like losing
weight, overcoming stress, becoming stronger & more flexible, feeling calmer
& more focused, etc.). You'll also learn gentle, practical ways to deal with
chronic ailments (like back/neck pain, depression, allergies, insomnia, HIV,
digestive problems, etc.). Students of all experience levels are welcome,
including men who've never taken a yoga class.

Class taught by Bart Church, who studied yoga for 10 years under several
senior, certified Iyengar instructors, and who studied yoga & Ayurveda for
five years under senior students of Baba Hari Das. He has taught
therapeutic yoga for more than 12 years, and has used yoga to overcome his
own neck & shoulder pain, as well as persistent digestive problems. Because
Bart has struggled with chronic challenges himself, he has great patience
for students who find exercise and diet change difficult.

12/20 Touch Your Shadow; 1/7 Expand Your Vision

“If you dream alone, it’s just a dream. If you dream together, it’s reality.”
-- Brazilian proverb

Please forward this invitation to any men who might be interested in connecting with other men to explore their shadows and/or expand their visions . . .

Tues, 12/20, MEN TOUCHING WITH HEART: on the Winter Solstice, use movement & healing touch to explore your shadow – those parts of you that seem to sabotage you from getting what you want. Many of us spend an enormous amount of time and energy distracting ourselves from our shadow or running from it. When we turn and look at our shadow, it is astonishing how simple its needs are, and how much energy it has to give us -- if we would work with it, not always against it. A licensed massage therapist, movement facilitator, yoga teacher, and long-time facilitator of shadow work will help men to use touch and movement as tools to gently get in touch with the feelings and needs of the so-called “dark-side” of our being.
INFO: Chris 503-223-8822 X2 or massage@qland.org
RSVP: www.lovetribe.org/menspirit

Sat, 1/7/06, MEN’S VISION QUEST RETREAT: Five incredible artists are collaborating to help you use various creative tools (story-telling, movement, collage, painting, psycho-drama, meditation) to explore, express, prioritize, and get support to manifest your visions. They’ll also help you explore and integrate the needs behind cynicism, procrastination, and fear, so they don’t sabotage you. For most of human history, men have supported one another in teams/tribes to explore, express, & manifest their visions. In modern times many of us lack the powerful support of a team in discovering and manifesting our authentic visions for intimacy/community, health, spirituality, work, and play – and a life that balances these realms. This retreat will have two parts (you may attend either or both):
* Part 1, 1:00-5:00 pm Creative Playshop: Discover your visions with art, movement, mindfulness
* Part 2, 7:00 pm – 12:00 am Get support in clarifying & manifesting your vision (make it real)
INFO: Chris 503-223-8822 X2 or visionquest@qland.org
RSVP: www.lovetribe.org/menspirit

Thanks for helping us to promote diversity among men by forwarding this email to men who might not hear about these events (especially men of color, men under 30 or over 60, men without computers, working class men, shy or introverted men, Trans men, married men, straight/bi men, etc).

To be successful, we need donations of time and money from people like you; please let me know if you'd like more information about how you might help.

Shifting How We See Ourselves -- A Radical Perspective

Below is an excerpt from a astonishing new essay written by Eric Rofes, one of the founders of the Gay Men's Health Movement, and a profound thinker on how the public health system and government demonize groups as a way of maintaining power. More importantly, this article calls for queer men to celebrate what makes us fierce, fun, healthy, and loving -- and to refuse to buy into the diseased pariah lens everyone in power seems to want to see us through.

This essay starts slowly, quietly disturbing our ideas about ourselves, and finally builds to a truly radical reassessment of how we are being portrayed, and how we see ourselves.

If you are intersted in reading the whole essage, it is available free at www.whitecranejournal.com/66/art6605.asp

GAY BODIES, GAY SELVES

Gay Men are healthy, happy, and life affirming. We’re creative, strong, and resilient; more than almost any other male population, we think outside the box, take responsibility for our actions, and care for our selves and others. We know how to get what we want and we know how to create lives that are satisfying and fulfilling.

In fact, we’ve developed our own home-grown social networks, support structures, and communal rituals, all of which are more functional, nurturing and sustaining in today’s environment than monogamous couples and nuclear families. More than most others, gay men know how to find community—even when it’s hidden—and build community—even in the face of formidable obstacles.

I make these claims based on what I’ve observed over thirty years of living as a gay man who’s maintained deep involvement in gay community life and lived most of his adult years in urban gay enclaves. I offer what I’ve learned to anyone hoping to become a contributing part of something called the “gay men’s health movement.” If you don’t take as your starting point that most gay men are already happy, healthy, and successful, this movement isn’t for you.

Nothing convinces me of the healthiness of gay men’s communities more than our relationship to HIV/AIDS. I say this knowing that our infection rates for HIV are precisely what most concerns those who see gay men as tragic, diseased and self-destructive and motivates them to repeatedly harangue us. The annual incidence of new HIV infections among gay men, between one and two percent each year over the past 10 years, is put forward as proof that we’ve returned to our wicked ways. Because 1-2% of uninfected gay men become infected with HIV each year, many people believe we are an irresponsible population unconcerned with our own health and that of other gay men.

While we might wish we could reach a point when no new infections occur among gay men in a single year, we know that once a disease become endemic to a population—as HIV has become endemic to American gay men—it requires radical interventions, such as vaccines or new technologies, to eliminate.

Twenty-five years into the epidemic, with a few geographic and population-specific exceptions—exceptions that are important and which merit resources and attention—gay men have shown that the large majority (between 70-80%) of us are capable of remaining uninfected. If we have brought the infection rate for gay men in most parts of the nation down below 20%, this suggests that more than 80% of us are capable of doing what needs to be done to stay uninfected. Likewise, if about 25% of gay men in major gay centers such as San Francisco and 15% in New York are HIV positive, this suggests that even there, almost three out of four of us remain uninfected.

This is a big deal, but it is never the focus of the doomsayers. It confounds what they think of us. In fact, it came as an extraordinary realization to me. If the majority of gay men can do what needs to be done to prevent HIV infection, we must be doing something right. If we were truly self-destructive, wouldn’t more than 75% of us to be infected, especially since the virus is so efficiently transmitted through sexual activity that brings great pleasure to most gay men.

The past 25 years has been a time when an inaccurate and phobic portrait of gay men as sick and self-destructive has been put forward, accepted as true, and taken hold as a central part of deeply ingrained public beliefs of gay men. In fact, I believe that the very systems created to protect and care for gay men—HIV prevention, addiction recovery programs, even gay-oriented mental health programs—use as foundational building blocks a pathology-focused understanding of gay men. Perhaps most extraordinarily, this same belief that gay men are damaged and dangerous has started to infuse some of the projects that are being created in the name of the “gay men’s health movement.”

In most of America today—including most gay centers, health clinics, and AIDS prevention programs—one can find others who look at gay men’s sexual practices, patterns of socializing, and cultural norms as troubling. Here one can find professionals who’ll examine gay male subculture, shake their heads, and point out what’s wrong. Whether the subculture involves urban street youth, bears, circuit boys, Black MSM’s, bare-backers, muscle boys, or leather men, you can find someone who’ll point out substance abuse, obesity, narcissism, low self-esteem, food disorders, and internalized homophobia as major themes of gay male life in America. You can create programs, write grants, establish projects, and make speeches decrying the “epidemic of epidemics” facing gay men, expressing surprise and dismay at the sexual practices of gay men, and identifying homophobia, internalized or externalized, as the dominant force influencing gay male life today.

But you’re wrong. You’ll win grant funding. You’ll get great press coverage. You’ll sell books. You’ll win community service awards. But you’re wrong.

You would be popular because you would buy fully into the dominant thinking about gay men that reigns throughout American culture today. Whether taking the form of pity or disgust, sincere concern or superficial empathy, blaming or shaming, the overarching understanding of gay men’s lives today is one of tragedy and pathos. Why are they so sex obsessed? Why do they do so many drugs? Why do they use steroids, work out obsessively, and dye their hair as they age? Why do they have to cruise all the time? You’d be affirming the overarching belief that gay male culture is immature, irresponsible, and irrational.

These views have been put forward for over 25 years by both conservative, Radical Right, up-front enemies of equality for gay people, as well as by liberal thinkers who rhetorically embrace the humanity of gay men, even as they condemn it. Why is the initial impulse of so many people—liberals and conservatives alike—to mistake creative and life-affirming pockets of gay male life as sick and self destructive? What is the difference between arch-conservative Paul Cameron citing gay men’s sex, sexual values, and sexual cultures with disgust and disapprobation, and liberal Larry Kramer citing gay men’s sex, sexual values, and sexual cultures with disgust and disapprobation? What is it about the various ways we mix masculinity, sex, and pleasure that must be censured and derided by both the left and the right?

Those of us who were there in the early days of the gay men’s health movement look at gay men today—and at the communities where gay men come together, establish bonds, and celebrate—and see creativity, caring, and audacity. We’re delighted and impressed with new generations of gay male styles, rituals, identities, and subcultures, even as we remember that gay men have always had an amazing ability to keep inventing bold, new ways of being, even in the face of commodification, backlash, and internal civil wars.

In fact, we know that for many gay men, homosexuality is a helpful and protective factor, it adds to the assets and gifts one gets from one’s original or home community in key ways:

Gay men are more mindful than most others and think out of the box, resisting limited social categories and societal directives. The simple experience of claiming our sexuality, identifying other men with whom to have sex with, and entering gay community encourages mindfulness and creativity.

As a class, gay men are skilled at both caring for themselves and caring for others. What some mistake as selfishness in gay men is often a kind of self-care that is rarely criticized in other men: the ability to understand and prioritize one’s own desires and needs. As David Nimmons has so well documented, Gay men balance this self-care with a large sense of altruism—caring for others in the workplace, neighborhood, and community.

Gay sexual culture allow us to make contact with men of other classes, races, and generations and form alliances which are richer and more diverse than those of most heterosexual men. Not only do we have sex with men who are different from us, but we form friendships and build community—however imperfectly—across stark identity lines.

In some ways, we take our lead from the women’s self-help movement of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s a movement that powerfully influenced gay liberation and gay men’s health organizing at that time. When women declared “Our Bodies, Ourselves,” they were shattering centuries of patriarchal pathologizing of women’s bodies and their lives. By working with other women to create new models of empowered health care and disease prevention, groups such as the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective, the Santa Cruz Women’s Health Collective, the National Black Women’s Health Project, and others, created a powerful model for marginalized populations—including gay men and people with HIV/AIDS—seeking to make a radical break with the dominant medical model along with all of its embedded biases, values, and priorities.

located on ne russell off mlk. (128 ne russell to be precise)
most of the staff is gay (and hot). they have a fantastic menu, and upstairs they have been putting on some great shows. the play ONE was there, LCD Soundsystem recently played, and the Dandy Warhols will be there next month.
also, Echo and the Bunnymen are coming as well as some benefits and fashion shows. the gallery is one of mark wooley's, and if your familiar with his other shows, you'll know what to expect. the menu in the cafe is delicious, and the atmosphere is really chill.
stop by and have a drink, i promise you won't be disappointed. i've been hanging out there a lot as of late...

11/5 How can Storytelling Change your Life?

Storytelling has been a vital part of almost every culture. For too many people in the modern world, storytelling has become a passive, solitary experience (watching TV or movies, surfing the web, listening to the radio).

In some cultures wars would be stopped to allow people to gather for collective, active storytelling. When we gather to tell our stories of transformation, hear other people’s stories, and actively weave those stories into our collective stories, we realize the power of storytelling to:
* make life worth living by connecting us with what is important & universal,
* allow us to connect with one another emotionally & physically, and
* inspire creativity by helping us to discover new ways of thinking, feeling, & moving.

Would you invite the men who’s stories you most respect, admire, or revile (including yourself) to join us on
Saturday, 11/5, 7-10 pm, for a
Special Men’s Spirit Pajama Party on
“Storytelling: Honoring the Many Masks we Wear (and Secretly Want to Wear).”

We’ll use heart circle, theater games, masks, and embodied play to share our stories of personal and collective transformation. The most important stories are not told just with words, but with our whole bodies. We’ll realize how our personal stories connect with the stories of other men, regardless of their size, shape, color, orientation, or background.

This event will be co-facilitated by noted painter & mask-making artist Greg Carrigan; transformational psychotherapist and trickster Aaron Hornstein; and performance artist and costume shape-shifter John Harry Bonck (Cayenne). Event co-sponsored by LoveTribe and Q-LAND, two non-profits that seek to create a more heart-conscious, life-affirming men’s community in the Portland area.

Thanks for inviting important men in your life to get to know you and themselves more powerfully on Saturday 11/5, at the mask-making workshop, 1-5 pm, and/or the Storytelling Pajama Party, 7 pm – 12 am. (P.S. – To attend the party you don’t have to wear pajamas – you can wear any comfortable clothing--, nor do you have to attend the mask-making workshop, but you sure could.)

Gay Nights @ Unusual Places

Anyone know of gay-oriented nights outside of the norm? We know about Jack and Snatch, Porky's too - but what else is out there? Anyone know of an under-utlized gay-oriented weekly event that could use some props?

Doesn't have to be at a bar - I don't need to drink to have fun. Just trying to scrounge up new things to do before summer slips away.

Dan Savage fucks his bf on Anne Lander's desk

I caught Dan Savage's book reading from "The Commitment" last night at Powell's - barely; it was an over-capacity crowd - and I hereby proclaim him the Gay American Jesus. His reading, although over-long and occasionally rambling (he kept mentioning the face that he'd had "four beers at Ringlers" to excuse his digressions), was for the most part whiplash-funny, insightful, and righteously on the mark. I had a couple mini-epiphanies during the talk, things I haven't heard before that really hit home. 1) That straight people themselves have already redefined marriage from its original intent (father trades daughter for dowry, husband owns wife, husband and wife remain in monogamous union until they die) to the point that there is no justifiable reason for excluding other unions on the basis of gender. This struck me as the single strongest argument I've heard yet in favor of gay marriage. 2) That only lefties accuse their own of "preaching to the choir"; right-wingers are happy to be preached to, and as a result their choir is much larger and more articulate than ours, since they've heard all the arguments in favor of their positions many times and can summon them at will. This struck me as an undeniably true statement, and it gave me a fresh rush of excitement for things like Air America which are beginning to build up the left-wing choir to the point that we may be able to wrest control of the country away from the conservatives who have all but ruined it.

A woman in the audience challenged Dan on his inflammatory essay "Better Dead than Red!" which ran in the Mercury after the last election. To my delight he replied in the most unapologetic and combative terms, saying he's sick of reaching out to people who spit at him, and if someone's going to tell him he's going to burn in torment for all eternity his response isn't going to be compassion, it's going to be "Fuck you, I hope your children die of leukemia." Well, why not? Why do only the Republicans and the Religious nuts get to be ruthless? I remember reading that piece right after the election and loving it, it expressed my anger and disappointment so well, so furiously and so fearlessly.

Dan admitted he had been wrong when he originally advocated in favor of invading Iraq. "At the time I thought maybe it was a good idea to take out a fascist dictator in the Middle East. Believe me, nobody hates Bush more than those of us who alienated all our friends by supporting the Iraq invasion."

There were one or two sour notes where we were reminded that Dan isn't omniscient - like when he referred to the Pearl District as a "funky, interesting area" of Portland - but by the end of the reading I was left with the conviction that Dan Savage is a voice that many, many people should be listening to, because the dude knows what's up.

Hi there! I'm Russell and I'll be in PDX Oct 12-19. I've only been once before, and I loved it, but I needed some direction as to some activities and sights. I'll be using public transportation.

I also want to get to play around with some of you hot dudes! Think a hungry cocksucker like me might have a chance up there?

A message from my genitals

Hello all,

My genitals asked me to forward this message to you.

FORWARDED MESSAGE ATTACHED>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Dear friends,

Hi, it's me, Andy's genitals. It's been a long time, hasn't it? I haven't even met some of you in person, but they way Andy talks about you, I feel like we go way back.

Anyway, I'm writing to let you all know that Andy is going to be competing in Strip Jeopardy at No Fish Go Fish (3962 SE Hawthorne) at 10 PM on Friday, September 2nd. The rules are pretty much what you'd expect; get an answer wrong, take off an article of clothing. You know what that means: I might get to see you all real soon!

Although, given Andy's encyclopedic knowledge of his chosen categories (Indie Film, Shows on the WB Network, and Popular Prescription Drugs), there's a decent chance that he'll remain clothed the entire evening. But who cares? Strip Jeopardy is always a hoot, and happy hour drinks are STRONG.

Hopefully I'll see you all soon?

Keer and Aurelius: the Triumphant Return

Aurelius and Keer (and Thor) are returning to Portland in September, after about six months living in Tennessee...

They'll be here in the middle of September, then heading down to California for a month or so, and plan to be back and living in Portland by the beginning of November, and they've asked me to start putting the word out that they need a place to live. They'd prefer to eventually be living by themselves but they'll take what they can get to start off, so if anybody has any leads on houses or apartments or shacks, please contact me through Tribe. You can also find Keer here....
